Sporting
Moutinho was born in Barreiro, District of Setúbal, but his birth was registered in Portimão, Algarve, where he grew up. After showing great promise as a child playing for Portimonense SC, he signed with Lisbon’s Sporting Clube de Portugal when he turned 13 to continue his football education.
During the 2004-05 pre-season, at just 17 years old, coach José Peseiro called Moutinho up to the main team, where he showed some talent early on. However, he later returned to the youth team managed by Paulo Bento and played alongside the likes of Miguel Veloso and Nani, helping the team win the national title that season.
In early 2005, Moutinho was called up for a Taça de Portugal match, finally playing 20 minutes against F.C. Pampilhosa, and made his Primeira Liga debut on January 23, remaining throughout the 3-0 win against Gil Vicente F.C. and wearing the #28 jersey previously worn by Cristiano Ronaldo.
