The Metropolitan Stadium is a stadium in Madrid, Spain. It has been the home stadium of Atlético de Madrid since the 2017–18 season. It is located in the Rosas neighbourhood, in the San Blas-Canillejas district.

The stadium was built as part of Madrid’s unsuccessful bid to host the 1997 World Championships in Athletics and was inaugurated on September 6, 1994, by the Community of Madrid. It was closed in 2004 due to the city’s failed bid for the 2016 Olympic Games, and in 2013 it passed into the hands of Atlético de Madrid.

The stadium was renovated and the new facilities were reopened to the public on September 16, 2017, when Atlético de Madrid faced Málaga in La Liga. The stadium had a capacity of 20,000 at the time of its closure and reopened with a capacity of 68,456 after renovation.

The stadium hosted the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final on June 1, 2019.

Metropolitan Stadium History

At the beginning of the 1990s, the Sports Department of the Community of Madrid promoted the city’s candidacy to host the World Athletics Championships in 1997. Preparations began for a stadium in the east of Madrid, next to the M-40 highway. and close to Madrid-Barajas Airport.

Construction of the new stadium began in 1990 and was based on a design proposed by Cruz y Ortiz. It was completed in November 1993 at a cost of 45 million euros, and it was dedicated in September 1994 in front of the then-IOC president, Juan Antonio Samaranch, the then-president of the Community of Madrid, Joaquin Laguna, and the then-mayor of Madrid, José Mara Alvarez del Manzano. The single-tier stadium with a 20,000-seat capacity became known as La Peineta (the comb) for its similarity to a traditional pinata.

The 1997 World Championships in Athletics were finally awarded to Athens in 1995, and La Peineta was used for minor sporting and cultural events for the first decade of its existence.

Notable Events & Records

On August 28, La Peineta played host to the second leg of the 1996 Supercopa de Espaa, which Atlético won 3-1 on the night but lost 6-5 overall.

Due to construction at its stadium, the Campo de Ftbol de Vallecas, Madrid-based Rayo Vallecano played part of its home games during the 1997–98 Segunda División season at La Peineta.

The 9th IAAF World Cup, a global track and field competition supported by the International Association of Athletics Federations, was held at La Peineta on September 21–22, 2002.

UEFA chose the stadium on September 20, 2017, not long after it had opened, to host the 2018–19 UEFA Champions League championship game.

The Baku National Stadium in Azerbaijan, which played home to the 2019 UEFA Europa League Final, was the other chosen nominee. After the finals of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League in 1957, 1969, 1980, and 2010, all of which took place at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium across town, this was the fifth such match to take place in Madrid.

The stadium first hosted the Spain national football team on March 27, 2018, for a friendly match against Argentina, which Spain won 6-1.

The 2018 Copa del Rey Final between Barcelona and Sevilla was held there on April 21, 2018. Barcelona defeated its opponent by a final score of 5-0. Since it was Andrés Iniesta’s final final with Barcelona, the crowd gave him a standing ovation when he was replaced during the game.

The Spanish women’s league match between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona was played at Metropolitano on March 17, 2019, and with 60,739 spectators in attendance, it broke the previous record for a club-to-club women’s football match.

Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final, which was played at the stadium on June 1, 2019.
