Kevin Long Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Kevin Long Club Career

Dublin City

Before agreeing to terms on a professional basis in January 2008, Long went through the Cork City youth system. He was a member of the 2009 FAI Youth Cup, Munster Youth Cup, and FAI Futsal Cup-winning Cork City squads.

The centre-back then came on as a second-half substitute and made his senior City debut away to St. Patricks Athletic. Then, on July 19, 2009, Long made his debut as a senior, pairing with Dan Murray in defence against Ipswich Town in a home friendly.

Long reportedly went to Preston North End for a trial, but while he was there, Burnley, Leeds United, and Charlton Athletic all expressed interest in signing him.

Burnley

Burnley beat out Everton and Celtic for the young player’s signing, and it was revealed on November 26, 2009, that he was to fly in to see the team. However, he would not be allowed to sign a formal contract until the January transfer window opened.

Long would remain at Burnley through June 2013 thanks to an agreement on a six-figure contract. It was announced that Long had joined Burnley on January 25, 2010.

To Accrington Stanley on loan

Long signed a one-month loan agreement with EFL League Two team Accrington Stanley on October 15, 2010. After some outstanding performances in the middle of the defence, the loan was later extended until early 2011.

In the club’s 2-3 loss against Rotherham United, he made his debut but was dismissed after 17 minutes for a foul on Adam Le Fondre. On January 18, 2011, he returned to Burnley after breaking a bone in his foot during a 2-1 victory against Cheltenham Town.

It was announced on August 5, 2011, that he had returned to Stanley on a loan for a period of six months. Similar to his initial loan at Accrington Stanley, Long kept his place in the first squad and scored his career-opening goal in a 2-2 draw with Plymouth Argyle on October 8, 2011.

Long would record victories over Macclesfield Town, Torquay United, and Bristol Rovers. On January 5, he rejoined Burnley after 26 appearances.

To Rochdale on loan

Long connected with former Accrington boss John Coleman at Rochdale in EFL League One on January 27, 2012, when he joined the team on an initial one-month emergency loan.

Long extended his loan agreement with Rochdale to the end of April after playing four games with two clean sheets during a run of two victories and a draw. Long kept on playing with the club’s first team even though they were demoted.

To Portsmouth on loan

Long signed a one-month emergency loan with EFL League One club Portsmouth on August 18, 2012. He started his debut match against Bournemouth the same day, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Long was dismissed after a second cautionable offense in his third game for the team, a 4-2 defeat.

Long made his comeback in a 3-0 victory against Crawley Town on September 9, 2012, after missing one game, and his final appearance was in a 2-1 defeat to Walsall eight days later. Due to a back ailment and the fact that his loan agreement was not extended, the game against Walsall ended up being his final game.

Go back to Burnley

On January 4, 2014, he scored his first goal for Burnley in a 4-3 FA Cup loss at Southampton. Long made his Premier League debut for Burnley against Newcastle United on January 1, 2015, in a 3-3 draw.

In the 17th minute, he took over for the injured Jason Shackell, but 20 minutes later, after sustaining an injury of his own, he was replaced by Steven Reid, making him the third Burnley player to leave the game at St James’ Park due to injury.

To Barnsley on loan

After fully recovering from his cruciate knee injury in November 2015, he signed a one-month loan agreement with League One club Barnsley. On his debut, he beat Oldham Athletic with a late goal to give his team a 2-1 victory.

However, he was dismissed against Peterborough United in his second game. In the semi-final penalty shootout, which was his final touch of the ball for Barnsley before he returned to Burnley the next day, he converted a penalty to help Barnsley go to the EFL Trophy final.

To Milton Keynes Dons: On loan

Long signed a loan deal with fellow Championship team Milton Keynes Dons on March 24, 2016, to play the rest of the previous campaign.

Kevin Long International career

In May 2017, he was given his first call-up to the senior team for the Republic of Ireland, which was part of a 37-man group that went to Fota Island for a training camp. He was selected for the final roster of the team that will play friendly matches against Mexico in New Jersey and Uruguay in Dublin.

As a second-half substitute, he made his first appearance for the national team on June 1, in a 3–1 loss to Mexico at MetLife Stadium. He replaced John Egan in the match.
