Luis Diaz medical update as Liverpool look to seal £49m transfer deal

Liverpool is conducting a medical for Luis Diaz in Argentina ahead of a January transfer window.

The ECHO understands that the process is progressing well and that the Reds should get their man before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Liverpool sent a club delegation to Argentina to meet Diaz while he is on international duty.

Medical tests are underway as Diaz prepares for Colombia’s next mission.

Argentina will receive its team on Tuesday at 23:30 British time.

If all goes according to plan, Diaz may be able to travel to Liverpool at the end of next week.

The 25-year-old Porto winger had been identified by Jurgen Klopp as a first choice for the summer of 2022.

But a couple of factors accelerated Liverpool’s interest and brought it forward to January.

Diaz is believed to have had a £67m release clause in his contract, but Porto was forced to take a financial hit after finishing third in their Champions League group behind Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.

As a result, the Reds’ bid of £37m with an additional £12m is about to be successful.

Anfield sources believe an early move for Diaz presents better value for the club, with Porto initially eyeing a fee of more than £49m in the summer months, which was the winger’s original asking price.

Spurs had also made inroads on Diaz this week, and Liverpool moved quickly to cut that off and bring him to Anfield.

Klopp’s men continue to fight on all four fronts this season.

And the arrival of Diaz appears to be a significant boost with the silverware prospect on the horizon.
