Nahki Wells Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Nahki Wells Club Career

Early Career

He was born in the city of Hamilton. He started his career in his home country of Bermuda with the Dandy Town Hornets, which he joined when he was 12 years old. Wells tried out for the Dutch club Ajax when he was a teenager.

The club offered him a contract, but he chose not to sign with them. Wells played for the Dandy Town Hornets’ top team in 2009–10 and scored 20 goals. In 2010, he played for the Bermuda Hogges in the USL PDL and scored 2 goals in 9 games.

City of Bradford

Wells and four other players went to try out for Bradford City at the end of June 2011. On July 22, 2011, he signed a one-year deal with Bradford City. Wells played his first game for Bradford City on the first day of the 2011–12 season. He came on as a replacement for Mark Stewart in the 74th minute. In a 4–2 win over Barnet, he scored his first goal for the Bantams.

On March 9, 2012, Bradford City took advantage of a clause in Wells’ contract and added a year to his deal. On April 14, he scored three goals to help Bradford beat Northampton Town by a score of 3–1.

He was later chosen for that week’s Football League Two Team of the Week. After this, former Bradford City player Dean Windass told Wells to stay with the club, and former Bermudan international Kyle Lightbourne compared him to Jermain Defoe. Wells and Bradford City started talking about a new four-year contract in early May, and he told fans later that month that he would stay with the club.

There were more rumours that Wells was leaving the club in June, and it turned out that he almost didn’t sign with the club at all. Wells said in July that he wasn’t in a hurry to sign a new deal.

Wells said before the 2013–14 season that he hoped the team would do well in the cup again and that he thought the club could get promoted again. In June 2012, manager Phil Parkinson said that the club would only sell strikers Nahki Wells or James Hanson for a lot of money.

In July 2013, the club turned down an offer from Peterborough United and later said that they had not received any other bids for the player. In August 2013, Wells’ strike partner Hanson talked about working with Wells in a good way. Wells scored two goals in a home game against Sheffield United on August 24, 2013.

He tied a club record by scoring in his eighth straight game, which was set by Derek Stokes in 1959–60. Teammate James Hanson praised Wells for this achievement. After the game, the club said again that they wouldn’t sell Wells, and they later confirmed that they didn’t get any offers for him on the last day of the transfer window.

Wells was nominated for the League One Player of the Month award on September 4, 2013. He won the award on September 6. Wells and Hanson’s work together up front has been praised in public by Wells and by journalist Simon Parker, who called them “one of the best front pairs League One has to offer.” Wells scored 53 goals for Bradford City, 49 of which came when he played with Hanson.

Wells signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Huddersfield Town on January 10, 2014, after moving there for a club record fee that was not made public. At first, the deal was just for a one-game loan so that the paperwork for the permanent move could be taken care of. Some people were upset that Wells moved from Bradford City to a team that was seen as a rival.

Wells made his debut with Huddersfield Town on January 11, 2014. He came in as a substitute in the 55th minute and scored the game-winning goal in a 1–0 home win over Millwall less than 24 hours after joining the team.

Wells scored 14 goals for Huddersfield Town in his first full season with the team. After Huddersfield was promoted to the Premier League at the end of the 2016–17 season, Bradford City got a bonus payment of $250,000.

Wells signed a three-year deal with Burnley for £5 million on August 31, 2017. This was the last year of his contract with Huddersfield. On August 23, 2018, Wells signed a loan deal with Championship team Queens Park Rangers. On October 23, 2018, he scored his first goal for QPR against Sheffield Wednesday.

Wells went back to QPR on loan for the 2019–20 season on August 8, 2019. He was nominated for the Championship’s Player of the Month award in October 2019 for how well he played in September. Burnley called him back on January 27, 2020.

Wells left Burnley on January 30, 2020, and signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Bristol City for a price that was not made public. He won the EFL Championship Player of the Month award for January 2020 for his work with Queens Park Rangers. He got this award in February 2020.

Nahki Wells International career

In 2007, Wells made his debut for Bermuda on the international stage. In addition, Wells competed for Bermuda in four unofficial matches at the international level during the 2007 Island Games.

Wells was recalled by Bermuda at the end of August 2011, and he was included in the island’s team for the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches that began in early September 2011. Bermuda’s team competed in five qualifying matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, including contests against Barbados, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago. Wells played for Bermuda.

In February 2012, the Sports Minister of the time, Glenn Blakeney, referred to Wells as “one of Bermuda’s most talented players, with an incredibly bright future.” In June 2013, Premier Craig Cannonier presented Wells with an award in recognition of his achievements. It has been said of him that he is the “star footballer” of the nation.

In May 2019, he was included in the provisional roster of 40 players that Bermuda would use for the 2019 Gold Cup. Later on in that month, he was selected to be one of the final 23 players on the squad. During the competition, Wells was successful in scoring twice, netting goals against Costa Rica in a loss by the score of 2–1 and against Nicaragua in a win by the score of 2–0.
