Tomáš Kalas Club Career

Vitesse loans

On August 22, 2011, Kalas signed a loan agreement with Dutch football team Vitesse Arnhem for the 2011–12 campaign. He received the jersey with the number 2. On September 17, 2011, he made his Vitesse debut against Roda JC Kerkrade, which resulted in a 5-0 victory for Vitesse.

Kalas acknowledged in March 2012 that he was content playing on loan at Vitesse even if he was unsure of his playing situation for the upcoming campaign. Ideally, he said, “I’ll remain at this club for another year.” “There are three choices, to put it simply. I’ll either stay here, return to Chelsea, or they’ll loan me out to a foreign team. I’ll chat with my managers regarding the upcoming season in late March to learn more.”

On May 17, 2012, Kalas scored Vitesse’s first goal against RKC Waalwijk in the 22nd minute; Vitesse won the game 3-1. The first goal in Kalas’ professional career was this one.

On July 10, 2013, José Mourinho, the manager of Chelsea, said that Kalas would remain and compete for a spot at the club for the upcoming campaign. Kalas played three times for Chelsea on their preseason Asian trip in 2013, winning matches against the Singha All Stars, the Malaysian XI, and the Indonesian XI.

Kalas fractured his fibula during preseason practise, which limited his time playing with the first squad while the rest of the team travelled to America for the Guinness International Champions Cup.

After finally overcoming his ailments, Kalas made his competitive senior team debut on October 29, 2013, filling in for Juan Mata in a 2-0 League Cup victory at Arsenal. In an appearance with a Czech chat show, Kalas discussed his position at Chelsea and said: “I participate in practises as a player. They substitute me for the cone if one is required.”

FC Köln is on loan

Kalas will spend the 2014–15 season on loan at 1. FC Köln, the club announced on June 11th, 2014. Kalas made his debut for Köln II, FC Köln’s reserve squad, on September 24 against Borussia Mönchengladbach II; Köln II won the match 2-1. Kalas made another debut for Köln II on October 25, 2014; the match resulted in a 2-0 loss for Köln II.

At Köln, where he only appeared in two reserve games, Kalas did not understand why he had been ignored. In a meeting, Kalas stated “They were pleased with my efforts at first, but I stopped participating in games after that. What went wrong is a mystery to me.” In the January 2015 transfer window, Kalas was linked to a move to his old team Vitesse as well as other English clubs due to the lack of playing time.

Middlesbrough loans

Kalas will spend the remainder of the 2014–15 season on loan at the Championship team, Middlesbrough announced on January 9, 2015. Kalas made his debut for Middlesbrough in a 0-0 draw against Reading the day after joining the Boro.

Aitor Karanka, the manager, commended Kalas’ competence at right-back, where Middlesbrough had faced difficulties after Damià Abella’s long-term injury in September 2014.

Against Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, Kalas remained at right back. Kalas sustained a high ankle sprain on January 20, 2015, while playing against Cardiff City. When the team defeated Blackpool 2-1 on the road on February 10, 2015, Kalas was reinstated to the starting lineup. On April 14, 2015, Kalas assisted Patrick Bamford, a fellow Chelsea loanee, in Middlesbrough’s 2-1 home victory over Wolves.

The terms of a short-term loan prevented Kalas from playing for the Boro through the end of the season. He requested permission to remain with Middlesbrough and train with the club until the end of the season, even though he missed the final three games of the campaign. Although the Boro were unable to defeat Norwich City in the championship match and gain promotion to the Premier League, Kalas had a significant part in their ability to reach the playoffs.

Fulham on loan

This was Kalas’ seventh loan when he signed up for a season-long loan with Fulham on July 13, 2016. Kalas made his debut in a 1-0 home win over Newcastle United on August 5, 2016. Kalas helped Fulham keep scoreless with a last-second block to stop Matt Ritchie’s goal-bound attempt.

After suffering a hamstring injury on September 24, 2016, Kalas missed his first league game. In a 5-0 victory over Huddersfield Town on October 29, 2016, Kalas scored his first goal for Fulham after making a full recovery from his injury. Fulham made it to the playoffs but fell to Reading in the semifinals, 2-1 on the road, with Kalas giving up the game-winning penalty by handball.

Bristol City

Along with fellow Chelsea loanee Jay Dasilva, Kalas joined Bristol City on a season-long loan on August 23, 2018, while both players were still playing in the Championship. He participated in 41 games for the club across all competitions.

After a successful loan period, Bristol City announced Kalas’ permanent signing on July 1 for an estimated club record fee of £8 million. He committed to a four-year deal through 2024.
