Who Is Álvaro Morata?

Álvaro Borja Morata Martín (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈalβaɾo moˈɾata]; born 23 October 1992) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a striker for La Liga club Atlético Madrid and the Spain national team.

He began his career at Real Madrid, making his debut with the senior team in late 2010. After winning the 2013–14 UEFA Champions League, he moved to Juventus for €20 million in 2014, winning the double of Serie A and the Coppa Italia in both of his seasons in Turin.

After being bought back by Real for €30 million, he won another La Liga and the UEFA Champions League in 2016–17 before joining Chelsea in 2017 for a club record fee of around £60 million.

In January 2019, he moved to Atlético Madrid on loan and joined the club permanently on 1 July 2020. Morata moved back to Juventus on loan in 2020.

Álvaro Morata Club Career

Real Madrid

Morata signed for Real Madrid in 2008 from neighboring Getafe after being a starter at Atlético de Madrid, and signed for Real Madrid C while still a youth.

In July 2010, after a successful season in Juvenile A, where he won two youth titles and scored 34 goals, he was promoted to Real Madrid Castilla, a subsidiary of Real.

Later that month, first-team coach José Mourinho took Morata and four of his teammates on a pre-season tour of the United States.

On August 15, 2010, Morata made his Castilla debut in a friendly against Alcorcón, scoring the only goal of the match. His debut in Segunda División B came on 29 August in a 3-2 win against Coruxo, and he scored his first goal in competition in a 1-1 draw against Alcalá on 31 October.

On 12 December 2010, Morata made his first team debut when he came on as a substitute for Ángel Di María in the 88th minute of a 3–1 La Liga victory against Real Zaragoza. Ten days later he made his debut in the Copa del Rey, coming off the bench again in the final minutes.

In January 2011, after Gonzalo Higuaín was injured, the Spanish media expected Morata to be his replacement in the main squad. Mourinho, however, dismissed it and said that “Morata is not yet ready to be a starter at Madrid. He trains with us, but he has to continue learning with Castilla.”

In this period Morata scored five goals in four games with the reserve team, while Emmanuel Adebayor was signed to replace Higuaín in the first team.


On 19 July 2014, Juventus announced that they had reached an agreement for the €20 million fee for the transfer of Morata, who signed a five-year contract with Real Madrid with the option to buy him back in the future.

He made his Serie A debut on 13 September, replacing Fernando Llorente in the last minute of a 2–0 home win against Udinese, two weeks later he came on again in place of his compatriot and headed his first goal for his new club when they beat Atalanta 3-0.

On 5 October 2014, in a 3–2 home win against Roma, Morata came on as a substitute and was sent off for a foul on Kostas Manolas, who was sent off for retaliation. On 9 November he scored twice in Parma’s 7-0 home demolition, and Llorente, whom he replaced after 71 minutes, added another two.

Morata entered the last ten minutes of the Italian Super Cup against Napoli in Doha, Qatar, on December 22, and scored in the penalty shootout as Juventus lost 5-6.

On 28 January 2015, Morata played the last 13 minutes of the Coppa Italia match against Parma, scoring the only goal of the match at the Stadio Ennio Tardini to qualify for the semi-finals.

The following month, at home to Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, he scored the winning goal in the 43rd minute of the first leg; he also started and found the net in the second leg, helping Juve to a 3-0 win at the Westfalenstadion.

Return to Real Madrid

On June 21, 2016, Real Madrid exercised their buy-back clause to re-sign Morata from Juventus for €30 million. His first competitive appearance was on 9 August, when he started in a 3–2 win over fellow Spaniards Sevilla in the 2016 UEFA Super Cup, being replaced by Benzema after 62 minutes. His first goal came in a 2–1 home win over Celta on 27 August.

On 5 April 2017, Morata took advantage of manager Zinedine Zidane’s rotations and scored three times in a 4–2 away win against Leganés to keep his team within two points of Barcelona with one game remaining.

Despite spending most of the season as Benzema’s substitute, he scored 15 league goals as the club became champions for the first time in five years. He added three goals in nine games of the UEFA Champions League, played by Real Madrid. won for the second year in a row.

On 6 July 2019, Atlético Madrid confirmed the permanent signing of Morata from Chelsea and he was to officially join the club on 1 July 2020, for a fee of around £58 million.

2019-20 season

On August 18, 2019, Morata scored the only goal in Atlético de Madrid’s victory in the first La Liga match against Getafe. On 1 October 2019, Morata marked his 300th professional match with an assist for the first goal of the game in a 2–0 away win against Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow.

On 22 October, he scored his first Champions League goal for Atlético by heading in Renan Lodi’s cross for the only goal of the match in a 1–0 home win against German side Bayer Leverkusen.

Return to Juventus

He made his first appearance for the club since his return on 27 September, in a 2–2 away draw against Roma in Serie A. He scored his first goal for the club since his return on 17 October, in a 1-1 draw at home to Crotone.

Morata scored a brace on 20 October to help Juventus win a 2–0 UEFA Champions League group stage match against Dynamo Kyiv away from home. In October, he had three goals disallowed for offside against Barcelona in a Champions League group stage match that Juventus lost 2-0 at home.

Morata was selected for the Spain under-17 squad for the 2009 Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria, he played four games and scored two goals as Spain finished third. He subsequently represented the under-19s at the Japan International Tournament, helping Spain finish second behind the host.

Morata was selected by Spain for the 2011 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Romania, helping the national team win the tournament with a competition-high six goals.
