Connal Trueman Football Career

Here, we take a closer look at his Football career so far.

Connal Trueman Club Career

The city of Birmingham

After the 2014–15 season, Birmingham exercised their option for another year on Trueman’s contract. Subsequently, in April 2016, he signed a one-year contract with the option for a different year to be added to it. On April 30, at home against Middlesbrough, he made his first appearance of the season in a matchday squad.

Adam Legzdins took over in goal after Tomasz Kuszczak underwent surgery on a broken nose, and he kept his place on the bench for the final match of the season, which was away against Cardiff City. In the interim, he served as an unused substitute for the Birmingham reserve squad participating in the 2016 Birmingham Senior Cup final.

He was defeated by the Solihull Moors, who were the champions of the National League North. On September 13, 2016, as the team was travelling to Reading, Kuszczak suffered an injury during the warm-up.

As a result, Legzdins was selected to start in his place, while Trueman was added to the list of substitutes. While Kuszczak was recovering, he continued to start all four league matches in which the team participated. In May of 2017, he put his signature to a new deal that was good for three years.

Trueman fell to the fourth choice after the arrival of David Stockdale in 2018, and he went out on loan to Solihull Moors until the beginning of the following year. After Stockdale went down with an injury in September, the team was left with only one healthy professional goalkeeper (Legzdins had been traded before to the start of the season).

Therefore, Trueman was brought back in to serve as Kuszczak’s backup. Trueman was included in the matchday squad after Stockdale was reinstated to the starting eleven in November by manager Steve Cotterill; however, when Garry Monk took over as manager in March, he reinstated Kuszczak to the bench position. Trueman was removed from the matchday squad.

Monk informed both Stockdale and Kuszczak that they were free to choose new clubs after the season, and neither Stockdale nor Kuszczak participated in the pre-season training with the first team. Trueman was the team’s first-choice goalkeeper through the preseason after an offer to acquire Ipswich Town’s Bartosz Bialkowski was unsuccessful.

In the first game of the 2018–19 season for Birmingham, which was a 2–2 draw at home against Norwich City in the Championship, he made his debut in the Football League as a member of the starting eleven. He maintained his spot in the starting eleven despite the arrival of the more experienced Lee Camp for the match against Middlesbrough.

Trueman “had no chance with a brilliantly struck goal but all at sea on a couple of occasions,” as reported by the Birmingham Mail. As a result, Camp took over as manager for the following match and for the remainder of the season, with Trueman serving as a frequent substitute.

He was scheduled to start Birmingham’s final game of the season, which was scheduled to take place away against Reading. However, illness prevented him from making an appearance in the game.

Ahead of the 2019–20 season, Trueman signed a two-year contract extension, though he started the season as the third choice, behind Camp and Stockdale on the bench. Despite this, Trueman began the season as the third choice.

After Stockdale was hurt in training in late October, and after Camp made blunders that cost the team points, he made his first appearance of the season on November 23 away against Huddersfield Town.

This was his first game of the season. After he and the team gave up five goals to Leeds United and then three goals to Hull City, Camp was recalled for his ability to organize his defence and retained for the rest of the season. He performed well enough to keep his place, and he did so for ten matches. However, Camp was brought back into the lineup after those two losses.

Loans

Trueman signed League One team AFC Wimbledon for the 2020–21 season on August 4, 2020, the day after Camp left Birmingham at the end of his contract. Camp had left Birmingham the previous day. He was assigned the number 1 jersey in the squad, and he started his loan out in the eleven for the first game of the season, which was an EFL Trophy encounter at home against Charlton Athletic that they won 2–1.

Trueman was brought back to the Birmingham squad on January 8, 2021, having previously played for the Dons in 22 matches. Midway through January, Trueman was the regular backup goalkeeper for Birmingham, but Andrés Prieto was out with an injury. On March 1st, Trueman joined Swindon Town on an emergency loan after being an unused replacement for Birmingham. Before returning to his primary club, he got the start in four matches, all of which the team lost.

Trueman joined Oxford United on an emergency loan on November 23, 2021, after having been a fixture on Birmingham’s bench as backup to loanee Matija Sarkic in the 2021–22 season as Etheridge recovered from COVID-19. Trueman played twice for Oxford United during his time on the emergency loan.

After Sarkic’s loan term was cut short due to a dislocated shoulder, Trueman reclaimed his position on the bench to support Etheridge. After Etheridge was knocked unconscious in a collision with Djed Spence in April 2022, he was used once, playing the final 20 minutes of the away match against Nottingham Forest he conceded shortly after coming on, as Birmingham lost 2–0, and Zach Jeacock took over the starting role for the next two matches.

Trueman was let go by Birmingham after the 2021–22 season, despite having spent the previous 15 years playing for the team. His contract had run its course.

Millwall

On August 4, 2022, Trueman signed a deal with the Championship club Millwall for a limited period until January 2023.
