Mallory Pugh Early Life

Swanson was reared in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, by Karen and Horace Pugh. Her mother was a long-distance runner, and her father ran track and played football. Swanson considered her older sister Brianna a role model and cites her as a reason she started playing soccer at four years old. 

She played club soccer with Real Colorado in the Elite Clubs National League from U-11 to U-18. Real Colorado U-16 won state and regional crowns and finished second in nationals. Swanson earned regional tournament MVP that year.

Swanson attended Highlands Ranch Mountain Vista High School from 2012 to 2016. Swanson had 47 goals and 23 assists in three seasons. After winning a state title as a freshman, Swanson was selected All-Colorado. 2013 NSCAA Young All-American and Mountain Vista offensive MVP.

Despite missing more than half of her sophomore season due to national team obligations, she helped the squad reach the state semifinals. Swanson scored 24 goals and 12 assists in 18 games as a junior, helping the club reach the state semifinals. She was selected 2014–15 Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year and 2015 Colorado Sports Hall of Fame High School Female Athlete. She was also the 2014 and 2015 NSCAA Young Girls National Player of the Year.

In January 2016, it was reported that Swanson had turned down college to turn professional and play for the National Women’s Soccer League club Portland Thorns FC when she graduated high school. Later that week, her father said the reports were false and that Swanson would join the Bruins of the University of California, Los Angeles for the 2016 season as originally planned. Spirit of Washington (2017–2019)

Swanson joined the Washington Spirit of the NWSL on May 13, 2017, after much talk about where she would go when she turned pro. On May 20, 2017, she played her first game for the Spirit against FC Kansas City. Swanson was a finalist for NWSL Rookie of the Year after scoring six goals in her first season.

For the 2018 season, Swanson stayed with the Spirit. She sprained the PCL in her right knee on May 27, which kept her out of play for 8 games. On August 5, against the Seattle Reign, she was back on the pitch.

Sky Blue FC (2020)

Swanson was traded to Sky Blue FC for four draught picks at the NWSL College Draft on January 16, 2020. She played her first game for the Sky Blue on September 5, 2020, against the Washington Spirit. She came in during the 61st minute of the game. Sky Blue won by a score of 2-1, and Swanson helped Margaret Purce score the game-winning goal in overtime.

The Chicago Red Stars (2021–present)

In December 2020, Swanson and Sarah Woldmoe were traded to the Chicago Red Stars for the fourth and eighth overall draught picks in 2021, a conditional first-round draught pick in 2022, and an international roster spot for 2021–2022. Swanson played her first game in the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2021. She started for her team against Kansas City. Swanson was voted the second most valuable player in the NWSL in 2021, behind OL Reign’s Jess Fishlock.

Youth Teams

Swanson attended the 2011 US under-14 girl’s national team identification camp in Portland, Oregon. In 2012, Swanson attended a U–15 national team training camp from February 11 to 18. She then joined the team for a second training camp from June 3 to 10 at The Home Depot Center. The U–14 national team held three separate training camps during the summer. Swanson participated in the August 12–19 second camp.

U-17 WNT

Swanson attended a U–15 national team training camp from February 24 to March 2 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California in 2013. She then moved up to the U–17 national team and travelled to San José, Costa Rica for an international tournament in late April. After the tournament, Swanson joined the U–17 team for a training camp from June 9 to 16. Senior Team

2016

Swanson was invited to the senior national team’s inaugural training camp of 2016 from January 5 to 21 before a match against Ireland. Swanson made her USWNT debut in the 58th minute of the match against Ireland on January 23, 2016, replacing Alex Morgan. She was the youngest national team debutant since 2002’s Heather O’Reilly. She scored her first international goal in the 83rd minute to seal the US’ 5–0 win.

Swanson played the full 90 minutes of the first match on June 2 in Commerce City, Colorado, and assisted in the 27th minute. She did not play in the second match on June 5 due to illness.

Olympics 2016

Swanson was named to the 18-player US Olympic team on July 12, 2016. She made her Olympic debut on August 3 in the team’s opening group match against New Zealand.  On August 9, Swanson replaced Megan Rapinoe in the 33rd minute of the team’s final group match against Colombia.

She scored the youngest US Olympic goal in the 59th minute. Swanson started against Sweden in the quarterfinals on August 12 and scored to put the US ahead 2–1. Swanson was replaced by Lindsey Horan in the 114th minute of extra time after the game ended 1–1. Sweden defeated the US in penalties.

2017

After turning 19 on April 29, 2017, Swanson was tied with Mia Hamm for third in USWNT history for goals before age 19, fourth in caps with 22, and second in starts with 15. In October, Swanson suffered a hamstring injury during a match against the South Korean national team.

2018

Swanson started 2018 strong with her first career brace on January 21, 2018, against Denmark, the USWNT winning 5–1. In her last game as a teenager on April 8, 2018, against Mexico, she scored her fifth goal of the year. 

For her teenage national team stats, Swanson was second all-time in starts before the age of 20 with 27, second all-time in caps with 35, tied third all-time in goals with 11, and first all-time in assists with 11. 

Swanson returned on August 31, 2018, against Chile after tearing her right PCL on June 8. Swanson assisted Christen Press’s third goal in the US’s 3–0 win.

2019

Swanson scored her first goal of the year in a 3–1 loss to France at Le Havre. She played in the 2019 SheBelieves Cup, where the US finished runners-up. On April 4, Swanson scored her second career brace in a 5–3 triumph over Australia. Swanson scored against Mexico in the United States’ final send-off series game before the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She scored 37 seconds after coming on in the 67th minute.

Women’s World Cup

Swanson was one of 23 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup players. She was the second-youngest player on the squad, behind 20-year-old Tierna Davidson. The USWNT defeated Thailand 13–0 on June 11, 2019. Swanson came on in the 69th minute, assisted Megan Rapinoe’s 74th-minute goal, and scored her first FIFA Women’s World Cup goal in the 85th.

She played in all three group-stage games against Thailand, Chile, and Sweden and scored at the FIFA Women’s World Cup at 21 years and 43 days old. USWNT won the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

2020

Swanson was named to the 2020 SheBelieves Cup roster, her fifth appearance at the tournament. In the United States’ third and final game against Japan, Swanson assisted Lindsey Horan’s goal. After the USWNT took a break from international play due to COVID-19, Swanson was injured and unable to participate in the national team camp from October 18–28, 2020. 

2021

Swanson started the year at the US national team’s January camp, but injury and inconsistent play kept her off the pitch until September and October friendlies against Paraguay and the South Korean national team. Swanson’s return to play was strong, as she scored three assists in the first game against Paraguay, the most by a US player since Alex Morga.

2022

Swanson returned to normalcy in 2022, playing in 15 of the US’ 18 games and starting 13 of them. She was named to the US roster for the 2022 SheBelieves Cup and finished as the tournament’s leading goal scorer, scoring once against New Zealand and twice against Iceland. 

Swanson continued to break the US and her records throughout the year. Swanson played in her 75th national team cap for the United States in the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship, becoming the 49th player to do so and the youngest since Heather O’Reilly in 2008. She had 14 goal involvements, 7 goals, and a career-best of 7 assists.

2023

Swanson scored three times in two friendly games against New Zealand and three more at the 2023 SheBelieves Cup in early 2023. She scored five consecutive USWNT games, a personal high.
