FIFA Men’s World Rankings of All teams 2023/2024

FIFA Men's World Rankings All teams

The FIFA Men’s World Rankings is a system used by the world governing body of football, FIFA, to rank all men’s national teams worldwide. The ranking system is based on points earned by a team over a four-year period, with more recent matches being more heavily weighted. The rankings are used to determine the seedings for the draw of major international tournaments such as the World Cup.

A points system is used, with points being awarded based on the results of all full international matches recognized by FIFA. Under the existing system, the rankings are based on a team’s performance over the past four years, with the most recent results and most significant matches being weighted further to help reflect a team’s current competitive state.

The FIFA men’s ranking has existed since 1992. A new ranking is published several times per football season. The score includes qualifying matches for continental finals, the finals themselves, the World Cup, and international friendly matches, among other things. Part of the method of weighting the points and achievements awarded is also to ensure that all countries have as many equal opportunities as possible.

Each country can get points per game played, but it can also decrease in number of points. There are several weighting factors. The number of points that can be scored in a match between two countries depends, among other things, on the importance of that match. This is determined according to a (rather complex) methodology of the World Football Association that takes into account the creation of the aforementioned equal opportunities for all countries.

The world ranking determines (in part) the draw for the World Cup

This ranking of all countries in the world in soccer also partly determines the World Cup draws. Firstly, the draw for the qualifying phase (the preliminary draw) takes place, in which all the continental football zones CONCACAF (North America, Central America and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL (South America), CAF (Africa) participate. , AFC (Asia), UEFA (Europe) and OFC (Oceania), in 2025, followed by the official draw for the final round of the 2026 World Cup.

Men’s Football world ranking: how does it work?

Qualifying matches for the various continental and world championships, international friendlies and World Cup matches and those of a continental final round count. The FIFA ranking gives an indication of the strength of each country. The most recent achievements and points count more than those from the distant past.
